farewell
Posted: November 1st, 2010 | Author: Lindsay | Filed under: News, Photograph | 4 Comments »This marks an extremely sad day for Coney Island as 9 out of the 11 businesses on the boardwalk lose their leases. The absence of these businesses will tremendously change the heart of Coney Island. I cannot imagine the boardwalk without the glorious, hand-painted signs and the distinct character each storefront provides.
Words escape me but please refer to the informative post by Amusing the Zillion for more information.
I’ve collected some photographs of the businesses that will not be returning to the boardwalk next year. All of my best wishes go out to the business owners and employees of these great institutions. Coney Island has lost its heart and it won’t be the same without you.

Girl, these are really amazing shots. Especially the way you shot the signs and typography. It is sad to see them go. They’re part of the Coney Island culture. It must be the NY developer who’s trying to get lease changed etc..
Thank you Sarah, I really appreciate it. It’s sad to see another neighborhood/thing in NYC being lost to “progress.” The new landlord, Zamperla, has a different vision for the boardwalk and is going to bring in different vendors. It is sad to see businesses that have been there upwards of 40 years being booted out. The color and flavor of the Coney Island Boardwalk will not be the same. I fear generic, ordinary and boring “replacements.” It will be interesting, to say the least, to see what the board walk will look like next year.
